BC School Fruit & Vegetable Nutritional Program

This is a provincial government program that delivers healthy fruit and vegetable snacks and milk to children at schools across the province. It’s a really successful program and is running its 10th year at Oppenheimer.
Goals of the programs are:
- increase the acceptability of, exposure to, and willingness
to try fruits and vegetables
- increase awareness of local fruits and vegetables
- increase the awareness of safe handling practices for fresh produce
- increase the availability of local fruits and vegetables in BC schools
- support local economy through business for farmers and distributors
Milk and milk products are rich in protein, calcium, riboflavin and vitamin B12 — nutrients essential to good health. It is difficult to obtain your daily requirements of calcium and vitamin D without consuming milk or milk products. Children who drink milk at school are more likely to meet the recommended 3-4 servings per day. By providing a healthy, fresh snack and presenting children with a wide range of fresh foods, we aim to show children how they can make their own healthy choices.

Here's how the program works at the school
After the food arrives at the school it is counted, sorted and distributed to the classrooms by parent volunteers. Teachers and/or students then give out the snacks to the students. The parent volunteers aim to get the produce out to the classrooms a day or two after it is delivered. Usually the delivery to classrooms is around 10am. The intent is for the fruit and vegetables to be enjoyed during class time, rather than used as a substitute snack at recess or lunchtime.
What kind of fruit and vegetables are there?
Whenever possible, the program’s first choice is to serve local fruits and vegetables, grown in British Columbia. The menu this year includes Anjou pears, Fuji apples, grape tomatoes, Mandarin oranges, kiwi fruit, snap peas, mini peppers and mini cucumbers…..yum!

Who funds the Program?
The BCSFVNP is a collaborative program from the provincial government’s Healthy Families BC with funding from the BC Ministry of Health. It is administered through the BC Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to “Working to bring BC’s agriculture to our students.” The Foundation is working with local growers and distributors to bring the fresh BC products to students.

Who helps with the program?
Esther Moreno is the program coordinator at Oppenheimer this school year. She is always looking for extra help with the fruit and vegetable program. Some of the fruit and vegetable deliveries are more time-consuming/labour-intensive than others. Esther is looking forward to meeting any new volunteers to assist all of us in making this a great year for the kids! Please contact Esther via email if you think you may be able to help. Remember – we can’t offer this opportunity without essential volunteer time! |
